Tinker. Hack. Invent. Saturdays
Every Saturday, every month (10am - 3pm)
It’s a weekly celebration of American ingenuity. We call it Tinker. Hack. Invent. and it takes place every Saturday. Join our Tinker Task Force and have a blast trying your hand at all sorts of things. Americans are famous for their ingenuity and resourcefulness, for their eagerness to improve and explore new ideas. This is your chance to learn firsthand how that spirit is alive and well today. Come explore your own ingenuity. Try your hand at something new, something different. The activities change month to month. Hands-on. How-to, DIY, science and more! The only limitation is your imagination. And it’s free* with museum admission or membership.
*Some supply fees may apply.
Monthly Themes
Each month we’ll offer a new project! Soldering, electrical circuits, and crazy concoctions are just a few of our themes. So you can return month after month for more tinkering fun! Make sure to be here on September 26th and December 26th for our quarterly Tinker. Hack. Invent. Pop Up events! We’ve invited several Community Makers to join the Tinker Task Force and extended the hours till 5pm for a special day of tinkering. These Pop Ups are free with museum admission.
(Activities and community makers are subject to change.)
August
Cardboard City
Join us Saturdays in August as we salute our newest exhibit —
Roadside America: Through the Lens of John Margolies
— by creating a retro recycled city. We’ll use recycled goods to create a whimsical roadside sculpture, sign or building. You can take your creation home or add it to our T.H.I.S. display. This activity is FF (Fun and free!)
September
Best of Discovery Camp 2015
Our Discovery Camp has wrapped up for the summer, but you can join us on Saturdays in September for a sampling of the innovative fun we had this summer. Free tinkering activities include soil-free-planting of Shasta daisies and creating a cloth pin doll. You can also watch our “Smashes & Crashes” auto safety demonstration and more!
Make sure to join us on Saturday, September 26th for our Community Maker Pop-Up. We’ve invited local community makers to join our Tinker Task Force, so there will be plenty of things to see and do for all ages! This expanded event runs from 10am – 5pm.
October
Treat-or-Trick Putt-Putt Golf
Simple machines have never been so much fun! First, create your own putt-putt golf obstacle using an inclined plane, screw, lever, wedge, pulley or wheel and axle, then decorate it to be funny or scary, before it becomes part of our putt-putt course. You and your friends or family can grab a golf putter, play our tricky course and win a special treat! Then you can take your obstacle home or leave it for others to play through! This is a great family activity. It’s free and open to ages 5 and up.
November
Create Your Own Not-Bored Game
This month, you'll use simple circuits to make your own Operation-style game, then test your hand-eye coordination. For ages 9 and older. Supply fee for this activity is $7 —
cash only please
. Young makers can also test their hand-eye coordination and see the magic of magnets with our magnetic fishing game.
December
Dancing Reindeer
Motorize a holiday reindeer figure, and watch it dance! Learn the basics of a vibrating motor, and then create a holiday reindeer figure that you can make dance with holiday joy! For children 5 and up with adult supervisor. Project involves hot-gluing and small pieces that could be choking hazards. Supply fee for this activity is $5 —
cash only please
.
Join us for a special Community Maker Pop Up event on Sat., Dec. 26th as the Tinker Task Force invite the 501st Garrison – Vader’s Fist, to join us for a full day of innovative fun. The 501st Garrison is a world-wide Star Wars costuming organization. They will share their secrets about creating these elaborate costumes and welcome photo opportunities with guests. This Pop Up event runs 10am – 5pm. We’ll be located in front of the Dymaxion house and Museum Gallery area. Our December THIS activity – a dancing reindeer robot and woven ornament will also be available for guests to create.
