About Image Source and The Henry Ford Photograph Collections

What is Image Source?
Image Source is a searchable database containing only a small fraction of The Henry Ford’s historic photograph holdings. To launch this new service, we have selected images illustrating the impact of the automobile and industrial manufacturing and design in America. We are emphasizing the lives and inventions of significant Americans including Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. You can search for images for personal use, publication, advertising, exhibit or other purposes. You may then pay for and receive downloaded image files and reproduction rights from this online resource.

How can I find out more about The Henry Ford Collections?
The Henry Ford photograph collections contain more than a million images ranging from early forms such as daguerreotypes, tintypes and cartes de visite to panoramas, modern snapshots and digital photography. Major holdings include photographs from Ford Motor Company (1903-1955), Detroit Publishing Company (1880-1920) and the Mack Truck Company (1905-1947). The collections also emphasize images relating to Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers, and other significant Americans such as Abraham Lincoln, George Washington Carver and William Holmes McGuffey. The Image Source database contains only a small fraction of these holdings, and new images are added regularly.

What if I don’t find the image I’m looking for in Image Source?

What if my company has its own permission forms?
The Photograph Order Form and Use Agreement is the only agreement we will sign to authorize use of images from our collections. The form is designed to include the permissions necessary to move forward with most projects.
