The Way to a Man’s Heart: The Settlement Cook Book, 1936
The Settlement Cook Book was organized to benefit the Settlement House in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which provided assistance to immigrants. Printed in over thirty editions since its first publication in 1901, it was the most successful fundraising cookbook ever.
2/6/2013 2:14:40 AM doctored it up just a little, but it's really a great soup I think baked beans were a little different then, because my canned beans were already soft.
When I went to make it, I didn't have butter (whoops) so I used left over bacon grease instead. Also, since my baked beans were already soft and my onions were not getting done, I took them out and sauteed them with more bacon grease, then added them to the soup. I added the tomatoes to mine as suggested.
I think next time I make it, I'm doing it the same way I did, but cooking the onions with bacon, instead of just the bacon grease, and then will add the crumbled bacon to the finished product. Just since my family likes stuff like that, and bacon makes everything better. lol
