As
the nation celebrated its bicentennial
in 1976, Americans became nostalgic
for the “simpler,
homespun” times
of the American past. Dressed in calico,
the Holly Hobbie doll looked like she
had just stepped through the door of
a one-room schoolhouse of one hundred
years before. Enterprising toymakers
offered poseable figures of the characters
from The Waltons, a popular
television show set during the Great
Depression of the 1930s.
