When the kids' TV show Sesame Street debuted on public television in 1969, it was an immediate hit with its pre-school audience. The programming mixed education and fast-paced entertainment featuring appealing puppet characters. Kids laughed at the antics of Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and Bert and Ernie while they learned basic reading and math skills. Parents enjoyed the program's literate good humor. Soon, licensed toy products featuring the show's characters began to appear on the toy shelves. In 1972, over nine million were sold.
But Sesame Street and its loveable friends don't just belong to the kids of the
1970s. Since then, the program has been an important part of childhood for kids
in over 84 countries. |
