The
popularity of banks and other mechanical toys showed Americans'
fascination with mechanical gadgets. Many clockwork toys
were imported from Europe, but American makers were manufacturing
versions of the toys as well. Cast iron banks were made
in an extraordinary array, including many with figures
and spring-activated mechanisms. Adults also hoped that
these engaging banks would encourage thrifty habits in
children.
