Ford, Henry (1863-1947), American industrialist, best known for his pioneering achievements in the automobile industry. Ford was born on a farm near Dearborn, Michigan, on July 30, 1863, and educated in district schools. He became a machinist's apprentice in Detroit at the age of 16. From 1888 to 1899 he was a mechanical engineer, and later chief engineer, with the Edison Illuminating Company. In 1896, after experimenting for years in his leisure hours, he completed the construction of his first automobile, the Quadricycle. In 1903 he founded the Ford Motor Company.

I'm selling a collectable replica of the model t assembly line. It is hand crafted of solid pewter and measures 27 inches long. Two pictures are available at: http://www.geocities.com/rconstantine1/images/misc/modelt1.jpg http://www.geocities.com/rconstantine1/images/misc/modeltlong.jpg the first is about 100K, but the second is about 11 times that. The second picture shows the full length of the piece in all its splendor. I am asking $2500. If you are interested and would like to contact me, email rconstantine1@yahoo.com

I love the old Model T's. I recently photographed a 1926 truck that is partially disassembled and needs to have the restoration finished. I am helping the guy sell it. It was sitting in an old barn in Massachusetts. It was like entering a time warp! I helped feed the animals and then looked at old cars. I do like admire a simpler kind of life.

The Model T Ford has remained my favorite vehicle over the years. This love affair began when I was only 8 and a derilict Model T pickup sat in front of the barn. I had a 1916 Model T Touring and I can remember all the fun that I had. This was back in Norwalk Connecticut. And I surely miss it. But I can remember one particular day I gave a ride to my little cousin. The float in carb use to get stuck. After getting stuck in traffic and people were shouting, get a horse and get that junk going. Here I was crank starting and finally I had to rest on the running board. And my cousin leans down and says don't you have a button like Dad does in his car. I could have taken the crank and hit him over the head. The last year of the brass radiator. And God Bless Ford for coming out in 1919 with a starter. That sure was a funny experience!

I am in the process of doing my family history and one day when talking to my Mom, who will be '83 next month, I asked the Model T that I heard she used to drive; Not to take any- thing away from women because we wouldn't be here without them, but when you talk cars to them, if it's the right color and shape, they say, "There's a car like ours.", right? Well that's been my experience, anyway. So I had to do a fair amount of reading about Model T's and then quizzed her with what I had learned. As near as I can figure it, what she was driving was a 12 year old Model T in 1938. In viewing the photos available on this site, I was able to find one and print it out. Thanks for your help. Harold [my dad]: "Back in the early 30’s, bout everywhere we went, we either walked or we went by boat or we went in somebody else’s vehicle because Dad never learned how to drive until 1935. A friend of his he worked with at the Quartermaster Depot bought an old Model T Ford, big old touring car, had the snap-on side curtains, and windshield wipers. You didn’t have wipers then, you had to reach up manually and whip them back and forth with your hand. So Dad in one of his good spells, I don’t kno w how come, but in one of his good spells, why he told mother he’d take her down to see her mother who lived down in Irvington, Kentucky. Orie Stagers had agreed to take us all, in the Model T, about a 1926 Model T, he got in 1933. Ha Ha. So anyhow, we all loaded up. They had 2 boys, of course, there were 7 of us all together. Them and the 3 of us, and we all squeezed into that old Model T. No rumble seat, just a big old Touring Car. Ising Glass windows, they had snap on. So anyhow, we got down the re and spent the day, and we came back about 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Of course, that’s only about an hours drive, but back then we’re talking about 3 hours with the roads and those slow cars and everything. We got about half way back and it starte d raining. Turned cold, got real cold. Started raining and that rain was just like ice almost. We had to stop and put those side curtains on and snap them things on. Time Orie and Dad got the things snapped on, they were soaking wet. So they got back in the car. Course we all stayed in all huddled up trying to keep warm. So anyhow, we started back and here Orie was holding on to that steering wheel with those two old levers on the side. One for the spark and one for the gas. He was up there holdi ng the steering wheel, guiding it, and Dad was over there flipping the windshield wipers by hand. Back then you didn’t have power steering. Had to have both hands on the wheel. Roads had bumps and everything, you know. Needed both hands on the wheel al l the time. You didn’t drive down the road with one hand back in those days. Both hands on the wheel. Another person had to reach up there and work that wiper back and forth. Ha Ha. That was the last trip he took us on. We didn’t drive no more. But Dad got his bonus in 1935 and so he bought his first car. Never knew how to drive and had never driven a car. He was good at working on old gasoline engines but he didn’t know anything about automobile engines. So anyhow, some old guy down in Jeff had a 1927 Chevrolet. It was just like brand new. Hardly had any miles on it at all. Dad bought that old car for $50. He come home and every time he’d take off, he’d jump, let up on the gas and it would throw him forward, step on the gas and throw him b ack, let up on the gas and go forward, step on the gas and go back! Ha Ha. He came in, put the foot on the brake and slide the car in for a sliding stop, kill the engine because he’d forget to shove the clutch in. My stepdad. Oh, he had a time learning how to drive." Now I need a picture of a big old Model T 1925 or 1926 Touring Car to illustrate this story from my Dad. Jan Allen

In my english class we had an assignment to do a report on anything made between the 1700 and 1910 and i chose the model T. I am inspired by Henry Fords thoughts about the world and i want to reflect upon this quote "Life is a series of experience, each of which makes us bigger even though it is hard to realize this. For the world was built to develop character, and we must learn that the setbacks and griefs which we endure help us in our marching onward".This man who dedicated his life to makeing affordable cars for the public includeing the model T has done so much for this country and the surrounding world. Even thought he is passed away i want to thank him. Thank you, Sencerly Devin Stewart

Im a design student and Im working on my degree project. It's meant to be a "Throne for Henry". It means that Im willing to extract the main criterias used for the design of the model T considering that the car itself reflects the way it was produced, and trying to make readable, through the object, Henry Ford as a protagonist. In other terms, Im building his throne of what he used to build his kingdom. What Ive found in this site has been very important. Thanks a lot pals in charge. If any of you have any other info about the design, engineering and construction of the model T, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Ill appreciate it a lot, you'll have a new friend and you'll appear on the credits. Thanks.

Other memories

December 27, 1997 - Larry Shepherd writes:

My name is Larry Shepherd, and I would like to tell you of a man dedicated to the Ford "T" model. His name is Hugh Harold Shepherd of Churchland community in Davidson County. Hugh passed on the 17th of August this year, but he left a lasting m emory on myself and many, many others. Married to his sweetheart during the Korean conflict years, he served his country, raised four grand children and maintained the legacy of the Ford "T".

Dedicated to his family and his country, Hugh served on in active reserve status, taught school as a living, raised four children with wife Annie Mae and built a car from the ground up. He chronicaled his every step of the construction in memoirs which he diligently kept of each and every transaction, be it cash or barter.

Starting in 1961, he began searching leads to out of the way resting places of cast off parts; fields, woods, sheds and barns. His friends to man policy got him a lot of information and help in finding just what he needed from time to time. His political standings as a stauch Democrat saw him through terms as Clerk of Court and later as a failed but not lost bid for Senator. By not lost I mean he did not let his defeat deter him from keeping his values. During these times, he taught school as an Agricultu re teacher and his students helped him many times to refurbish the treasures that would some day become his "Fun Car".

From it's beginning in '61 until his passing in '97, the car took on many forms and stages of completion and incompletion. My first ride came in '85 after I lost my father, Hugh's brother, and I was recuperating from my battle with Cancer. Hugh took me un der his wing and I considered him as my second father as well as best friend. He had brought the car to a point where it was used regurlarly on weekend jaunts for himself and Annie Mae around the lacal country, AND our drives from my home to memory lane i n my neck of Rowan County. Hugh came to my house one day with an offer of a ride. The car was complete and road worthy except for the addition of a wooden truck bed which he constructed for the car. After a brief ride, he pulled to the roadside and made m e get behind the wheel. From that point on......I was a "T" fan.

Hugh used the car as it was meant to be. He never prevented anyone from touching or sitting behind the wheel. He participated in many local functions with it and always refered to it as his "Fun Car". People from many walks of life were touched by him and his car. It is now complete with original parts from front to rear including an original truck bed found in the mountains and a "Turtle Deck" to convert it into a roadster. It is still, and if I can help it, will always remain in the Shepherd family. H ugh and the "T" will always be in my heart and memories. His motto in life was......"USE IT UP, WEAR IT OUT, MAKE IT DO OR DO WITHOUT". It was a phrase seen many times referring to the troubled, Depression times when he was born. Hugh's dedication to fami ly, country and life will always be an inspiration to me.

November 16, 1996 - Jim Patterson writes:

My father, now 78 years old, talks about how his family drove from Southern California to Pomeroy, Washington in a 1918 Model T Touring in the early 20's carrying with them all of their worldly possessions. The family consisted of Grandpa and Grandma and their 4 children, (2 boys and 2 girls) aged 1 year old to 11 years old. Grandpa would drive for a full day coming north while following the harvest, work about a week or however long the job lasted to earn enough money to make the next leg o f the trip. It took them all summer to get to Washington. I still have the old wooden rocking chair that was tied to the back of their Model T so that Grandma could rock the baby at every stop.

Due to this, I have been a Model T hobbiest since my high school days in the early 60's and occassionally take my 1923 T Touring through parades with that same rocking chair tied to the back. It's a great memory to think about how this family stuggled wi th young children to move thousands of miles to fulfill dream.

July 8, 1996 - Jan Erik Gulbrandsen of Norway writes:

My neighbour Kristian Øiom has a 1926 model T on which he has built his own designed woody body for 5 passengers. He also is the owner of a 1923 model Fordson Farming Tractor!

In Norway, there are about 100-120 model T. A lot of them were assembled in Copenhagen of components made in USA. In Copenhagen, they produced a special version: a 5 seat Touring model. In this model it was possible to take away some of the seats and m ounting a pick-up plan. In Norway a 1 ton Truck "TT" was produced. Its body was all woody.

In Norway, there is a Ford T club with about 80 members. We arrange one rally a year for the model T. We have named the rally "Pedalfarten" (because the model T are named "Pedalford in Norway). One of our members have a E and S model Ford.

When Henry Ford was on his one and only visit in Norway in 1915 he was transported in a Model T 1911. One of the members of the club is in possession of this special car.

Charles Young writes:

I remember as a child, a fri nd of the family drove his model T Ford, from California to Martin Michigan, where I was born in 1930. He was very ill and gave the Model T to our family and returned to California via train, expiring soon after his return.

That is how we got our first automobile, a wonderful Model T Ford.

I myself as a school boy purchased a 1925 Model T Ford and had tons of fun getting it running and driving it all over the place, fishing, and taking friends for rides.......
