The Model T was introduced on October 1, 1908 and so technically may be considered a 1909 model in line with the industry's practice of dating cars by model year. Over the next 18 years, the Model T would dominate US car sales, with half the industry's total output in 1918-1919 and 1921-1925. In 1911-15, 1918, and 1921, Ford earned more than all other automakers combined.

But by 1926, it was clear that the Model T was failing. In spite of cosmetic upgrades and numerous price cuts, the Model T could no longer compete with other automakers, in particular Chevrolet. Public tastes were changing. A more affluent buying public looked for style, speed and comfort over utility. The car that "first put us on wheels" had overstayed its welcome.

The Model T was offered in many different models throughout its history. All of these body styles were built with the same engine and essentially the same chassis: the Model T roadster, coupe, coupelet, runabout, roadster torpedo, town car, touring, and the fordor and tudor sedans.

The transmission

Ford's patented planetary transmission was built in unit with the engine. The end of the transmission housing had a ball and socket joint that received the ball front of the driveshaft and took the thrust from the rear wheel bearings. The transmission was controlled by the clutch, reverse and brake pedals, marked "C" "R" and "B" respectively.
