This display recognizes the past history, the growing achievements and the future growth of women in automotive racing. Women in the Winner’s Circle: The Traveling Exhibit will inform visitors about the accomplishments of women in motor sports and showcase racing as a gender-neutral sport, where men and women truly compete against each other on an equal playing field. Divided into five areas – Pioneers, Trailblazers, Modern, Here We Are and The Future – this exhibit categorizes numerous fearless female drivers and highlights their place in history. Featuring the stories of legendary drivers such as Jutta Kleinschmidt, Desiré Wilson, Shirley Muldowney, Sarah Fisher, Louise Smith, Danica Patrick and Lyn St. James, the exhibition will also include a collection of racecars, helmets, racing suits, trophies and awards, photographs, audio visual elements and other media which further reveal the strides these women have made in this particular sport. An interactive kiosk will also be available for visitors to research drivers and dive deeper into their biographies and accomplishments. Lyn St. James is also a part of a new educational initiative, powered by The Henry Ford, called OnInnovation.com. OnInnovation.com captures the stories of some of the most influential innovators, creative thinkers and risk takers changing our world today. The purpose of this site is to ignite in users that “can-do” spirit and inspire a culture of innovation. St. James, a legendary groundbreaker in the racing world, was the first interview conducted by The Henry Ford for this project. Her oral history will be previewed on the site along with other innovators including Steve Wozniak, Elon Musk and Don Chadwick. Stories from Women in the Winner’s Circle: The Traveling Exhibit are part of The Henry Ford’s collection and will be featured in the institution’s upcoming $15 million, 22,000 square foot permanent exhibition on American auto racing called Racing in America.
