An object can become iconic through its collection and interpretation at a museum. When museums collect objects, they remove them from their place out in the world. Once inside the walls of the museum, these objects become symbols for, or representations of, their original context. As museums choose how to interpret the past through the objects they collect, they re-create the past as they want others to see it. As the cultural meanings and significance of an object change over time, so do its interpretation and, sometimes, even its status as an icon. |
