When racing officials ruled that driver Bobby Unser had passed cars illegally while exiting the pit area on lap 149 at the 1981 Indianapolis 500, they issued him a one-position penalty. This put Unser in second place, behind Mario Andretti who was declared the winner. After a prolonged appeals process, the officials’ decision was reversed on October 9 of that year and Unser was reinstated as the winner.
