November 2009 Pic of the Month Abraham Lincoln in Photographs |
Thomas U. Walter, Architect of the Capitol, designed this impressive chair for use in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1857. However, the chairs had a short residence in the Capitol building--members of the House objected to them because of their weight. When the chairs were replaced in 1859, several were sold at a Washington, D.C. auction. Photographers like Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner obtained chairs at that time--these chairs appear in images taken in these photographers’ studios during the 1860s. ID.68.127.1 |
