This illustration of the Lincolns’ formal parlor, from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper March 9, 1861, shows an artist’s conception of the solid, middle-class taste of the Lincolns’ Springfield home. It appears that the artist was attempting to provide a sense of the parlor, instead of meticulously drawing each piece of furniture--several of the pieces look as if they could not survive outside of the illustration.
