June 2007 Pic of the Month Counterculture Makes the Scene |
The counterculture movement of the 1960s was a reaction against the moral complacency and social conformity of postwar America. The decades-long strain of the Great Depression and World War II had made people eager to focus on personal and family goals and material success rather than festering social issues. Young people began to protest self-absorbed materialism, the Vietnam War, racial strife, social inequality, and parental values and control. |
