Schlee and
Brock's "Greatest Flight"
|
|
Edward F. Schlee and William S. (Billy) Brock
didn’t achieve their goal of flying around
the world, but they became heroes nonetheless.
Schlee was a Detroit oil millionaire with a
thirst for flying. In 1927, he purchased the
Stinson-Detroiter monoplane that he had just
sponsored in the Ford Air Reliability Tour,
changed its name from "Miss Wayco" to "Pride
of Detroit," and enlisted the help of
airmail and barnstorming pilot Billy Brock.
Only two months after Charles Lindbergh’s
historic flight across the Atlantic Ocean,
these two men hoped to circle the globe in
15 days—the first private citizens to
embark on such an ambitious trip.
