Heroes of the Sky
for the classroom

The Henry Ford and Romulus Community Schools collaborated to create model programs and materials for students and teachers that use community resources as a catalyst for teaching and learning. During the 2003-2004 school year the fifth-grade classes at Barth Elementary School in Romulus adopted the theme of flight as a yearlong focus. Social studies, math, science and English language arts curricula were adjusted to teach these core subjects using the vast and varied resources of The Henry Ford. Teachers, students and parents had the opportunity to participate in a variety of arts and cultural experiences:

  • Visiting the new exhibit Heroes of the Sky: Adventures in Early Flight in Henry Ford Museum.
  • Immersing themselves in the Wright Brothers Home and Bicycle Shop in Greenfield Village.
  • “Being there” by watching the giant screen film The Magic of Flight in The Henry Ford IMAX Theatre.
  • Delighting in live musical theater at an original play The Flight Fantastic at the Anderson Theater in Henry Ford Museum.

Project activities were built around Heroes of the Sky, a new Henry Ford Museum exhibit about the people, culture, science and business of flight from the first 40 years of aviation. Lesson plans, activities and projects that could be facilitated by teachers in the Museum and classroom were created. Each are constructivist and engage multiple intelligences and learning styles. All activities, experiences and materials align with Michigan Curriculum Framework Content Standards and Benchmarks.
