Right out of high school, having landed a job with the State, I wanted to buy my very own new first car. I was somewhat interested in a little red Corvair convertible but my dad had other thoughts so I then pursued the first Ford Mustang to come out on the line in mid-1964.
I went to the dealership, looked at the impressive Mustangs and placed my order for a 64 1/2 Ford Mustang fastback in a metallic blue color. I eagerly awaited the arrival day of my new ride. On the day we picked up the car, the salesman handed me the keys ... and I passed them on to my Mom. He said aren't you going to drive it? I replied ... I've never driven a stick shift before ... so Mom had to drive us home and I practiced driving a three speed on the floor.
After I learned to drive the car, my high school girl friend and I went downtown to "cruise the gut".. Unfortunately at one end of town the turn-around point was a big hill. Coordinating the clutch, the brake,, and the gas was not something I had much practice doing. As I attempted to go up the hill I was extremely embarrassed as I slowly rolled backward into the car behind me.
I had many adventures and fond memories of cruising my Mustang as I went from teen years into adulthood.
