From Black to Red
by:
Carl Berger
Our first new car, this 1958 Volvo saved our lives and turned red in the process. On an initial trip back from parents in Denver to Sacramento where we had just moved, we (the newlyweds) hit black ice on the just completed Interstate 80. This amazing car slid 134 feet (we measured later) on the ice and rolled over into the median. Upside down we noticed the front window was gone, climbed out and checked for injury, the passenger had a slight cut on the right thumb. The car was ruined. We rolled it back over and climbed in using our legs to push up the partially crushed roof. We found the windshield and used masking tape to hold it back on and waited for a tow truck to take us to the nearest town, Fort Bridger Wyoming. Next morning with the spare tire replacing a bent wheel and a pillow in the right side window, we resumed our trip to Sacramento. Looks at filling stations on the way were quite different than the looks given to "Swede Pea" our prize black new Volvo. Amazing damage, barely repairable, so we celebrated by changing it's color to red and finally sold it years later to get a bigger car for our increasing family. We'll never forget this very favorite and safe machine.
