jeanlankesI wanted an old 1941 World War 2 ambulance off the MASH TV show for the $1000 I had saved up. What my dad allowed me to get was a 1961 Ford Falcon station wagon. Neither was a chick magnet, but the 4-wheel drive would have given me a much broader spectrum of terrain to cover (was looking at a wildlife protection profession once I graduated from high school).
What I found out was that many of the early year Mustang drivetrains were interchangeable. Trannies, bell housings, engines, axles, etc. - needless to state that my little falcon flew like the wind by the time I got done swapping a complete 64-65 drivetrain under the body. With American Mags and Goodyear G60-15s in front and M60-15s in the back, and, with the wheel wells flared just enough to cover the tires - back axles were cut and narrowed, it got quite the hole shot on most cars in my locale (San Fernando Valley and Van Nuys Blvd).
The interior was redone in cherry wood on the dash (hand made in high school wood shop), door panels and handles (also done in wood shop), tinted windows, and sculpted wood paneling in rear side windows. I kept the stock white exterior and chrome bumpers. Unfortunately, ex-wives pilfered all the pictures through the years, so no pictures remain.
Makes me want to look at my 2007 Fusion AWL SEL for what I can now do to hop this one up! Any suggestions on other models I can swap in? ;-)
