Marylin RufenerMy 1931 Essex was my first car. I was just 16 years old in Rockford, Illinois. Oh, she was a beautiful sight to behold. Shiny black with yellow spoke wheels and a tiny yellow stripe under the windows. I loved that when you sat in the back seat, you could stretch out your legs and barely touch the front seat. And for “air conditioning” one only had to crank out the front windshield. Oh, what fun we teenage girls had in our “Untouchables” car! And yes, would love to have her back! How much did I pay for her, you ask? Just $400 in 1958.
