McGuffey Papers (1836-1894):
|
William
Holmes McGuffey (1800-1873) was an educator, minister,
author and college president. He is best known for
the series of Eclectic Readers (McGuffey Readers), textbooks
which were widely used throughout much of the nineteenth
century. Henry Ford used the McGuffey Readers when
growing up and later brought his birthplace
to Greenfield Village and built a one-room
schoolhouse using logs from a barn at McGuffey's birthplace.
Ford also republished a number of the McGuffey readers.
The papers in this collection include letters by William
McGuffey, dating from 1846-1872, relating primarily to
affairs at the University of Virginia and academic interests.
Also included are the lectures and correspondence of William's
brother, Alexander Hamilton McGuffey, who collaborated
on the Fifth Reader. |
