Spring Season in Greenfield Village

Come Celebrate Spring in Greenfield Village
Experience “new beginnings” with fields to plant and plow, farmhouses to clean, sheep to shear and new baby animals to greet. All over Greenfield Village our 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century farm families bring the diverse aspects of America’s agricultural history to life. It’s a sure sign that winter is over at last. Spring Season in Greenfield Village is free to members and free with Greenfield Village admission.

Miss Nardin or Mr. Chapman will help you brush up on your 19th-century civics lessons in a one-room schoolhouse in this engaging and informative 20-minute interactive program. A lively lesson plan focuses on citizenship as “students” have fun with true and false questions, spelling, and even some tongue twisters.

Edison's Light Fantastic
Meet Thomas Edison in this 15-minute play and hear about one of his most "electrifying" inventions! This one-man show gives a glimpse into the inspiring life, work, and mind of Thomas Edison. Edison speaks to a group of reporters visiting his complex on the day after his first public demonstration of the world’s first practical incandescent light bulb on Dec. 31, 1879.

Home from Kitty Hawk
Experience the thrill of the Wright brothers’ first flight as they take you back to that amazing and inspiring day in this 20-minute play. Fly back in time with Orville, Wilbur, and their sister Katharine as they take you on a dramatic journey through their experiments, struggles, and joys. The audience joins them and their sister, Katharine, on December 23, 1903 just after the brothers return home from Kitty Hawk. They recount their amazing and inspiring first flights that made history on December 17 of that year and forever changed the world.

Meet Huckleberry Finn, one of Mark Twain's most beloved characters, and hear a few of his memorable adventures (and even how Samuel Clemens chose his pseudonym Mark Twain!).  Favorite scenes and escapades from 1885’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and 1876’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer come alive in this high-energy 15-minute show.

Tally’s Tales
Share the inspirational music and stories of slavery and endurance in this interactive 15-minute dramatic presentation.  Tally was a cook on the 700-acre Susquehanna Plantation in St. Mary’s Country, Maryland and she certainly used many of the innovative survival tactics described in this play.  The reenactment of a "Buh Rabbit" tale told in verse is always a hit with schoolchildren and families!

Meet inspirational suffragists and experience the struggles they encountered to earn the right to vote in this lively 20-minute “rally.” Suffrage anthems, student participation, and powerful words from women including Susan B. At Armington & Sims Machine Shop, adults and children 6 and older can operate a 1917 lathe to make a brass candleholder to take home. $5.

Glass Shop
Hands-on 30-minute workshops. Create your own glass flower. $35 includes instructions, production and shipping. (Must be 14 years or older.)

Roundhouse Turntable Demonstration
10:50am, 1:45pm and 3:50pm, weather permitting

Candle Workshop
At McGuffey Birthplace, make two hand-dipped beeswax and soybean wax candles. $4.

what to bring, what to wear
Greenfield Village is spread over dozens of acres-- comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes are a must. A large portion of activities are held outdoors, rain or shine. Dressing for the weather is a must. Bring umbrellas / rain gear and prepare for a wide range of temperatures.

Wheelchairs are available for a small fee at the Village entrance. Electric scooters are also available for a fee, but only in limited supply. Wheelchairs and scooters are rented on a first come, first served basis-- plan to arrive early if you need to rent them. You are welcome to bring your own wheelchair or scooter, however, upright scooters (Segways) are not allowed on premises.

Children's wagons are also available to rent for a fee at the Village entrance. You are welcome to bring your own stroller or wagon, however, recreational scooters, bicycles or in-line / in-sole skates are not allowed inside the Village gates.

Bring a camera; photography is allowed in all areas of the Village.

Tickets to Greenfield Village are available online, through The Henry Ford Call Center (open 7 days a week, 9am - 5pm) 313-982-6001 and at all admissions counters. Tickets can be mailed when reservations are made 2 weeks or more in advance. Tickets purchased less than 2 weeks out will be held at Village Will Call.

The Henry Ford is located in Dearborn, Michigan on the corner of Village Road and Oakwood Boulevard, just west of the Southfield Freeway (M-39) and south of Michigan Avenue (US-12).

From the East or West via I-94:
Take I-94 to the Oakwood Boulevard exit; go north on Oakwood. The Henry Ford is 2.5 miles from the exit on the corner of Village Road and Oakwood Boulevard.
From the South via I-75:
Exit to northbound Southfield Freeway (M-39); drive 4.1 miles to Oakwood Boulevard (Exit 4). Left on Oakwood and drive 1.8 miles.
From the North via Southfield Road (or I-96):
Take Southfield Freeway (M-39) south 4.5 miles past I-96 and exit at Michigan avenue (Exit 6). Continue on the Southfield service drive (veer left) for .5 mile. At the first stoplight, turn right onto Village Road (through the iron gates) and drive .75 mile.
