When a patron requires access to the museum's collections which cannot be accommodated in the usual ways (e.g., viewing exhibits on display in the museum or village, using the museum's computerized databases and photographic files, or by using materials in the Reading Room), such a request is considered "special access to the collections" and falls within the scope of the "behind the barriers" program. Through this program, patrons will be accompanied by museum staff to view an artifact; no handling of artifacts is permitted. Patrons wishing to avail themselves of this fee-based service must contact the Research Center at least two weeks in advance of their proposed visit to request special access. The museum reserves the right to refuse to grant special access to the collections.
