The new home entertainment of radio provided an easy way for toy makers to appeal directly to kids--through promotions, free giveaways, and toys related to specific radio shows. Charlie McCarthy, a ventriloquist's dummy, proved a popular radio celebrity among both adults and kids, and toy versions of him sold especially well.
