Fresh Air and Active Play

Many parents encouraged their children to play outdoors--because it was healthy but mainly so that they could return to their chores and duties with their excess energy already spent. Boys might have fun shooting marbles or rolling a barrel hoop, while girls might enjoy a game of battledore and shuttlecock--an early, more sedate version of badminton.
