Rural America Shops by Mail

A piano in the parlor was a status symbol for 19th century Americans. Tens of thousands of mass-produced pianos poured from American factories during the late 19th and early 20th century. Those who lived far from a town or city with a music store could shop by mail. A large, heavy purchase like this would be crated up, shipped by railroad to a town nearest the buyer, and then delivered to their home in the horse-drawn wagon of a local express company.
