As a teen I had dreamed of having a spiffy sporty car, and always loved Pontiacs. When I saw that a new two seat sports commuter was coming out, I enthusiastically looked through spy photos of the prototypes in my monthly car mags.
I had been saving money most of my teen life (and even pre-teen) working for my father painting his apartment rentals and at a family restaurant in my home town. I had saved up enough money (with some help from my grandmother...who started a savings account for me for college) to order a brand new 1984 Fiero 2M4.
The demand was very high, and the waiting list was longer than anticipated by Pontiac. So much so, they had to have more than the one shift working that they expected would be needed. Well over 136K Fieros were built that first year, when a max of about 95K cars was predicted.
As a result, my factory order was bumped to the '85 production list. I upgraded my order to the new GT model with the V6! The car finally arrived in May of 1985. T-tops were developed by American Sunroof Corporation, and I had every intention of having them installed, which I did during my senior year in high school. Some called me the Fiero Kid in high school, and I was voted as the guy with the coolest car at our graduation dinner. That car took me to three proms!
I kept that car stored in my grandmother's garage until after she passed away. I finally sold the car to the postmaster of Akron, Ohio 12 years later with only 17K miles! I wish now that I had kept it as I had intended, but at the time I had five cars and just did not have the space to keep them all. Maybe one day I will find another fine Fiero GT to play with!
