My first car – a Ford Maverick
by:
Danny J. Higgins
I lived in New Windsor, Illinois with my big brother Jeff and my mom & dad. My parents bought my brother a used Ford car for his graduation gift in 1977. So in 1979 as a graduation gift my parents bought me a used 1971 or 72 Ford Maverick. It had a 6 cylinder engine. It was a copper color and the body was in ruff shape with rust. All four floor pans were rusted out. People could sit in the seats and watch the road go by underneath them. It was always fun to tinker with and I learned a lot about working on engines with that Maverick. It was a good running car and always started in the winter. I loved to drive that car. I cruised many a town & country roads in it. Took many dates out to the movies and out to eat in it too. Took it camping and sight seeing. It took me back and forth to my first job at The Woodhull Truck Plaza in Woodhull, Illinois for several years. Finely the car just gave out and it would cost more to fix it then it was worth. My next car was a used 1973 Ford Gran Torino.

Thank you
