While
toy guns and soldiers had been around
earlier, it was not until the 1930s
that boys were actively encouraged to
use their imaginations and their playthings
to "play war." Military toys
and play sets became particularly popular
during and just after World War II,
when patriotism was especially strong.
With the material shortages during the
war, toymakers used their ingenuity
to create products of wood, cardboard,
and paper. |
