The museum’s collection of sheet music and music books
consists of over 6,000 items dating from the late 18th century to
the 20th century. The collection includes music that achieved
great popularity, the “greatest hits” of an era, as well
as lesser-remembered pieces that also provide a musical reflection
of the events, inventions, and attitudes that shaped people’s
lives. Much of the collection dates from 1860-1910, a time
when increasing numbers of Americans were taking up the study of music
as instruments became more affordable and easier to play.
