By the 19th century, the development of mechanical music devices
allowed people to “play” music without having to possess
musical skills. These devices, available for both home and commercial
use, offered mechanical versions of popular or classical tunes--until
they were swiftly replaced in popularity by the phonograph during
the early 20th century. The museum’s collection of over 60 mechanical
music devices includes player pianos, cylinder and disc music boxes,
novelty music boxes, barrel organs, and organettes.
