Posters are large graphics on paper intended to make an immediate
impression on the viewer. They typically advertise or publicize
activities, causes, events, goods, and services. The Henry Ford has about 1400 posters dating from 1834
to 1990. They include circus, world's fairs, theatre, movie productions,
political campaigns and consumer products. Posters from World War
I cover recruitment, war bond drives and industrial and civilian
participation, and from World War II show home front support activities.
Poster publishers represented include Strobridge Lithographing Company
of Cincinnati, Ohio and J. Ottmann Lithograph Company of New York,
while artists include Howard Chandler Christy, James H. Daugherty,
Joseph Pennell and Peter Max. |
