The Wright Brothers Papers
(1867-1953):
|
The first time Wilbur (1867-1912)
and Orville (1871-1948) referred to themselves
as "The Wright Brothers" was when
they started their own printing firm at the
ages of 22 and 18. They later began repairing
bicycles for friends, and in 1892 the two
brothers opened a shop and formed the Wright
Cycle Company. In this shop, they also experimented
with their aviation ideas and built their
first Flyer. On December 17, 1903, in Kitty
Hawk, North Carolina, they launched the Flyer
for the world's first manned, heavier-than-air,
machine-powered flight. The bulk of this collection
covers the period following their historic
flight in 1903. The material includes magazine
articles and newspaper clippings, photographs,
scrapbooks and correspondence.
