Noah Webster Papers (1788-1886):

Noah Webster (1758-1843), now famous for his dictionaries, also achieved distinction as an educator, lawyer, lecturer, and journalist.  Among other things, he published the Blue-Backed Speller (1783), a widely used school textbook, practiced law in Connecticut for four years (1789-1793), was instrumental in the formation of American copyright law and edited Federalist newspapers in New York (1793-1798).   His best know works are A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language (1806) and the American Dictionary of the English Language (1828).   This collection consists primarily of Webster's correspondence and that of various family members.
