Dr. Clara Barrus Papers:
|
Dr.
Clara Barrus (1864-1931) was one of a small
number of women who graduated from medical
school in the late 19th century. After
graduation in 1888 from Boston University,
she practiced in New York State and was also
a professor of psychiatry at Women's College,
N.Y.C. Dr. Barrus was close friends
with John Burroughs,
the famous naturalist and nature writer.
He named Barrus his literary executor and
official biographer and she subsequently edited
and published his journals and The Life
and Letters of John Burroughs. This
collection is comprised of personal correspondence,
from Dr. Barrus to her friends, Mr. and Mrs.
J.E.B. Greene, whom she often addresses as
"The Evergreens." The letters
cover a variety of subjects, including Barrus'
lectures and trips, her relationship with
the Burroughs, and her experiences setting
up her own private sanatorium, editing Burroughs'
papers and writing his biography.
