Many American colonists adored jewelry and clothing. Ladies wore wedding rings, pins, earrings and mourning jewelry that commemorated the death of a loved one. Gents carried European watches and bejeweled watch accoutrements. The Victorians made jewelry an important part of their wardrobes, preferring matched jewel sets. New York area manufactories produced machine stamped and plated jewelry by l875 which storekeepers purchased wholesale and had shipped to their stores for sale in their small communities. Twentieth century manufacturers experimented with new materials such as bakelite or other plastic for new effects and reduced costs. |
