Men and women alike have enhanced what nature has given them by using cosmetics, body padding, and tonics to look and feel even better. In the early years of the Colonies women used powders to cover up poor complexions, often the result of disease, and used colognes to mask body odor. Victorian fashions required bust improvers and bustles in voluminous dresses (some men padded their vest fronts in the l840s). The 20th century woman sought a slimmer, sleeker figure in order to look smart in more revealing fashions--every weight reduction tool one can imagine was gobbled up by the eager consumer. |
