Until the late nineteenth century, most veterinarians received training at private schools or informally through reading and practical experience. However, by the late 1800s many agricultural colleges offered coursework and degrees in veterinary medicine. As the profession matured, so did the suppliers of veterinary tools and equipment. With more than 15 million horses and 50 million cattle on American farms by 1900, it was no wonder the profession developed as quickly as it did. |
