1939 New York World's Fair Poster

Poster: In 1939 The New York World's Fair
ID: 86.15.5.1

Since the mid-nineteenth century, the world's fairs or exhibitions have provided a forum for the introduction of new technologies and new consumer products. The world's fairs and exhibitions, combining entertainment with scientific, technological, and educational exhibits, have provided manufacturing and commercial interests with opportunities to promote the mass consumption of their products. In this way, the fairs have played a significant role in the growth of the consumer culture.

The emblem of the 1939 New York World's Fair, the modernistic Trylon and Perisphere, was reproduced on 25,000 items between 1939 and 1940. Among these was this poster pictured here.

Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village also has many other items from world's fairs including programs and post cards. Please contact the Research Center for more information.
