Taking
A Picture:
The
cameras used by the Detroit Publishing Company photographers
were heavy and bulky. Instead of photographic film,
the cameras used plates of glass. The photographer would
have to wait until he got back to the studio before he
could develop the glass plates and make prints.

“Senior” camera made by Rochester Optical Company,
Rochester, New York, about 1895. This camera is similar
to the folding camera used by Detroit Publishing Company
photographers in 1899.
