One Photograph, many Pictures:
The photographic and print files of the Detroit Publishing Company provide an opportunity to see the many ways one photograph could be modified by the techniques of cut and paste, colorizing, cropping, and reformatting.  The application of these methods allowed the company to create several different versions of a scene from one photographic shot.

Based on the original black and white photograph of the Canyon of the Rio Las Animas, about 1883, by William H. Jackson, this color lithograph, copyright 1905, included the addition of a snowcapped mountain in the distance.
