Photographers:
The
Detroit Publishing Company created its negative files
by sending its own photographers out on the road and purchasing
other photographers’ files. In his early years
with the company, Jackson traveled for months at a time,
taking his own photographs and examining other photographers’
files for possible purchase.

William
Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was a prolific photographer, probably
the best known of the nineteenth-century western landscape
photographers. Before Jackson joined the Detroit Publishing
Company in 1897, he worked for the U.S. Geological and Geographical
Survey of the Territories, ran his own studio in Denver,
and traveled the world as a photographer for the World’s
Transportation Commission.
