We've been putting flexible-fuel vehicles, which run on E85 ethanol fuel, gasoline or a combination, on the road for more than 10 years. However, we know that for energy diversity and alternative fuel sources to be a reality for our customers, the availability of ethanol fueling stations must be expanded.
To expand the availability of E85 ethanol fuel, we are working with energy partners, policymakers and the public.
Midwest Ethanol Corridor
Through our partnership with VeraSun Energy, a renewable energy company, we've launched a "Midwest Ethanol Corridor." By converting about 40 gasoline fuel pumps to E85 ethanol fuel pumps, the availability of E85 ethanol fuel was expanded by about one-third throughout the states of Illinois and Missouri.
We estimate there are 50,000 owners of Ford flexible-fuel vehicles in Illinois and 28,000 in Missouri. We'll continue to work with fuel providers and officials in other states to develop the Midwest Ethanol Corridor.
About E85 Ethanol Fuel
E85 ethanol is a fuel blend that contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Ethanol is a completely renewable alternative fuel source that, in the United States, is most commonly made from corn. Gasoline sold in the United States frequently contains up to 10 percent ethanol, but an increasing number of vehicles on the road today can operate on blends containing up to 85 percent ethanol.
