Battery Electric Vehicles are powered by electric motors and rechargeable batteries. They are "fueled up" by plugging into an electrical socket, and they have zero tailpipe emissions. Like PHEVs, however, BEVs' total life-cycle emissions will depend on the electric power source. Significant challenges also remain regarding battery technology, driving range before recharge and battery recharge time. Ford is continuing to monitor developments in battery technology that could make niche vehicle applications practical and economically feasible.
