Expanding the Hydrogen Fueling Infrastructure

Research into hydrogen, including partnering to begin to build an infrastructure, is part of our overall efforts to address the challenges of climate change and energy independence.

Moving Forward

Taking a step forward in making hydrogen a viable fuel option, together with BP and the City of Taylor, Michigan, we opened a hydrogen fueling station. Taylor is home to four of our 30-car Ford Focus fuel cell demonstration fleet. The four fuel cell vehicles are being used as full-time official city vehicles.

Taylor Residents Looks Ahead

By using hydrogen and other alternative fuels, residents of Taylor are not only lessening our nation's dependence on foreign oil, but also helping to support development of technology related to alternative fuels, which may lead to job creation and add to the state's tax base.

Our Hydrogen Fleet

We currently have a fleet of 30 hydrogen-powered Focus fuel cell vehicles on the road as part of a worldwide, seven-city program to conduct real world testing of fuel cell technology. The fleet has accumulated more than 300,000 miles since its inception.

With this fleet on the ground, an enormous amount of information is being generated that can be integrated into future fuel cell vehicle propulsion systems.

Having the fleet on the road has also allowed us to gain valuable feedback on servicing vehicles in the field. As a hydrogen infrastructure is developed and implemented at each of the fleet's locations, we're learning how to design a hydrogen fueling interface that's seamless and customer friendly.

Working with BP

BP produces 5,000 tons of hydrogen per day and is a key player in hydrogen demonstration projects across the globe. Committed to delivering clean energy, BP is providing the hydrogen fuel at the Taylor refueling station. Though its involvement with this station, BP is gaining real-world experience in hydrogen fueling infrastructure and helping to build public awareness of this developing technology.

By leveraging each other's resources, both BP and Ford can more quickly deliver products to market that satisfy our customers' desire for responsible personal mobility. Together, we can also design products optimized to perform better together.
