To help reduce the environmental impact of driving, we're working on advancing the use and development of alternative fuel vehicles, including the development of fuel cell vehicles (FCV).
We've been conducting fuel cell research for more than 10 years and believe fuel cell vehicles could be commercially viable by the middle of the next decade.
Focus FCV
The Focus FCV is one of the industry's first hybridized fuel cell vehicles and combines the improved range and performance of hybrid technology with the overall environmental benefits of a fuel cell.
On the Road
In 2005, we delivered an evaluation fleet of Focus FCVs for placement in demonstration programs in the United States, Canada and Germany.
This demonstration fleet includes vehicles in the following locations:
- Three vehicles operated by Ford
- Five vehicles now in use in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia
- Four vehicles operating in Berlin, Germany
- Five cars delivered to the Sacramento (California) Municipal Utility District
- Five cars delivered to the State of Florida
- Five delivered in Michigan
- Three cars at the California Air Resources Board (CARB), the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Department of General Services (DGS)
All of the programs receiving Focus FCVs are designed to promote development of hydrogen-based technologies.
In addition to gathering critical data for the advancement of fuel cell technology, our fuel cell vehicles are constantly on the move around the world for various shows and demonstrations. When refined, they'll make their way to a showroom near you.
Sharing Knowledge
Knowledge gained engineering Ford's Escape Hybrid and Mercury Mariner Hybrids has been shared between the fuel cell vehicle engineering team and the people working on both Ford gasoline-powered hybrids on the road today, as well as future gasoline hybrids.
Past Fuel Cell Vehicles
The success of the Focus Fuel Cell Vehicle is an important milestone in Ford's long-term strategy to move toward hydrogen and alternative-fuel powered cars and trucks as viable consumer transportation options. Over the years, we've developed other fuel cell vehicles to explore the potential of this exciting technology.
