As part of our commitment to diversity, we're helping educate students across the United States about the contributions of Latinos.
Focusing on Achievement
In 2006, more than 1.9 million elementary and middle school students benefited from in-depth lessons in Latino heritage through our participation in the Newspapers in Education (NIE) program. For this program, we worked with newspapers in 23 cities to present a bilingual educational guide for teachers to use in their classrooms that focused on the achievements of significant Latinos, historical events in Latino literature and the art of storytelling.
After learning about Latinos and Latino culture, students submitted artwork and essays about a Latino person they admire. The 14 first-place state winners competed for a national award, which was presented in Dearborn, Michigan.
Past NIE Programs
In 2006, we sponsored NIE programs on African-American, American-Indian, Asian-American, and women leaders, as well as rural occupations.
