The economic prosperity of the Latino community depends on the advancement of all Latino professionals. To support the economic prosperity of the Latino community, we are working with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and the National Association of Hispanic Publications Foundation (NAHPF) to support an internship program for Latino journalism students.
Supporting Latino Students and Publications
Spanish language publications often struggle to find staff and contributors that can not only write in Spanish, but who also know the local community, understand how the U.S. society, economy and political systems work, and are qualified journalists. This internship program is designed to grow the number of journalists who have developed ties to Latino or Spanish-centered publications. Hopefully, after their internship experiences, these Latino students will consider careers at these types of media companies.
This innovative collaboration with NAHJ and NAHPF benefits everyone. Sponsoring organizations gain access to outstanding Latino students, and the students have the opportunity to advance their careers while contributing to the Latino community.
This year, the program will choose five Latino students who will take part in internships with Latino publications in Washington, DC. NAHJ and NAHPF will also choose five editors or publishers who work at Latino-themed publications to guide and mentor the students chosen to participate in the internships.
The five students chosen to participate will begin their internships with intense training at the daily newspaper or website produced at NAHJ's 25th Anniversary Convention and Media & Career Expo.
Last year, two of the students chosen to participate in the internship program received job offers from the publications where they did their internships.
Collaboration with Organizations Experienced in Supporting Latinos
The associations with which we work in this effort have many years of experience supporting Latinos, and are dedicated to the fields of journalism and media in the Latino community.
The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) was founded in 1984. With nearly 2,000 members throughout the country, NAHJ focuses on supporting and developing Latinos in journalism and the media.
The National Association of Hispanic Publications Foundation (NAHPF) is a sister organization of the National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP). NAHPF publishes a yearly directory of Latino scholarships, performs media research, and directs voter registration campaigns and educational programs.
Our work with NAHJ and NAHPF helps us contribute to the economic prosperity of the Latino community through a program that supports Latinos as they launch their careers in journalism and the media.
