Ford Appoints First-Ever European-Based Director of Global Powertrain, Research and Advanced Engineering

• Ford appoints Andreas Schamel as its new director of Global Powertrain, Research and Advanced Engineering. The role is based in Europe for the first time
• Schamel, formerly chief engineer of Powertrain, Research and Advanced Engineering, Ford of Europe, to continue as managing director of Ford’s European Research Centre in Aachen, Germany – a role shared with Pim van der Jagt

AACHEN, Germany, Oct. 1, 2012 – Ford has appointed Andreas Schamel as its first European-based director of Global Powertrain, Research and Advanced Engineering.

In addition to leading Ford’s global powertrain activities, Schamel will retain his position as joint managing director of Ford’s European Research Centre in Aachen, Germany – a role he shares with Pim van der Jagt. He will continue to be based in Aachen.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me, but also acknowledgement for our engineers in Europe,” said Schamel. “While we operate globally, there is a lot of great work being led by Ford of Europe at the moment; you only have to look at the new 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine and our expanding range of ECOnetic Technology features as proof.” 

Schamel, previously chief engineer Powertrain, Research and Advanced Engineering, Ford of Europe, will report to Paul Mascarenas, Ford’s chief technical officer and vice president of Research and Advanced Engineering, and replaces Dan Kapp, who was based in the U.S. and who is retiring after six years in the role.

After joining Ford in 1987, Schamel held senior roles in Gasoline Powertrain R&A Europe, Gasoline Direct Injection Technology, and also was chief engineer of Engine Research and Advanced Engineering for Ford, based in the U.S.

Schamel was instrumental in the introduction of Ford’s EcoBoost petrol engine technology, helping to lead the development and launch of the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine in the U.S.
