News CenterFord and SHFT.com Celebrate Earth Day with the Launch of New Food Tripping App
NEW YORK, April 22, 2013 – Today Ford Motor Company and SHFT.com, the sustainable media platform that curates the best in design, art, food, film and music, celebrate Earth Day 2013 with the launch of “Food Tripping,” a free app allowing users to find a broad range of fresh, local, seasonal, healthy food options on the go. Food Tripping is available for free download starting today at the Apple App Store and www.foodtripping.com.
“Our goal is to provide the vehicles and resources to help people live more sustainable lives,” said John Viera, global director of sustainability, Ford Motor Company. “This new app is just one example of how Ford and SHFT.com are collaborating to help inspire people to make smarter environmental decisions.”
Whether on a road trip or just exploring a nearby neighborhood, people now have more options when it comes to finding fresh and local food. With a database of more than 50,000 “good food” eateries, farmer’s markets and food stores across the nation, the geo-based app provides a variety of sustainable, healthy, organic and locally sourced food options. The Food Tripping app features popular, sustainable food choices, such as Whole Foods and Chipotle, as well as local options like Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Francisco and The Fat Radish in New York.
With an invitation for user-generated content, the Food Tripping app has been developed to allow users to suggest local “good food” spots to add to its database and contribute to the growing community making shifts in their lives and habits. This has been the goal of the Ford and SHFT.com partnership since its inception, helping inspire people to make smarter environmental decisions.
“We are excited to see this app come to life,” said Peter Glatzer, co-founder of SHFT.com. “It’s a great tool to have while on the road, or wherever you are in the country when you’re at a loss for finding a healthy place to eat. What’s great about the Food Tripping app is its scope. The app features a broad range of options from local organic markets and juice bars to microbreweries, wineries, distilleries and fine dining where local seasonal fare is served. It’s a perfect partnership for SHFT to have with Ford, and we’re proud to be in this together.”
Ford and SHFT.com teamed up in 2011 to inform and motivate people to think about the products they choose – from the food they eat to the vehicles they drive. Through the launch of the Food Tripping app, along with the recent documentary series “The Big SHFT” and other events and film festivals, Ford and SHFT.com continue to collaborate on initiatives to inspire consumers to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Allowing drivers to make smart and healthy food choices on the road is just one of Ford’s initiatives to promote sustainable living. Ford offers a range of fuel-efficient vehicles, with five electrified options. Ford also takes a sustainable approach to designing vehicle interiors by using materials like soy, wheat grass and denim in its cars. For instance, the all-new Ford Fusion has the equivalent of 38.9 recycled plastic bottles in its seats.
The Food Tripping app is available for iPhone, iPad and Android devices. To celebrate its launch, Ford and SHFT.com have curated the best green gadgets to take on road trips – from a backpack made from used plastic bottles to a solar-chargeable music boom box.
